Giants trade for Sage Rosenfels

09/04/2010 -
East Rutherford, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Giants have found a
backup quarterback after acquiring Sage Rosenfels from the Minnesota Vikings
on Friday.
The trade also saw running back and return specialist Darius Reynaud heading
to New York in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick in 2011 and a
conditional pick in 2012. The deal is pending passed physicals from both
players.
New York had been in the market for a qualified backup to Eli Manning since
Jim Sorgi was put on injured reserve earlier this week with a shoulder injury.
Sorgi was signed in March after six seasons backing up Manning's brother
Peyton in Indianapolis. That left second-year pro Rhett Bomar the most
experienced QB behind Manning.
In Rosenfels, the Giants get a nine-year veteran with 32 games of experience
and 12 NFL starts to his credit. The 32-year-old's most prolific year came in
2007 while filling in for an injured Matt Schaub in Houston. Rosenfels
appeared in nine games and started five, completing 64.2 percent of his passes
for 1,684 yards and 15 touchdowns, with 12 interceptions.
In 2008, Rosenfels again filled in for an injured Schaub and saw time in six
games with five starts. He ended up connecting at a 66.7-percent clip for
1,431 yards and six TDs to go with 10 picks.
The Iowa State product served as the third-string quarterback in Minnesota
last year behind Brett Favre and Tarvaris Jackson.
Reynaud is expected to help fill the void left by wide receiver and punt
returner Domenik Hixon, who tore the ACL in his right knee during practice
back in June and is expected to miss the entire season.
The 25-year-old is a third-year pro out of West Virginia that converted from
wide receiver. He was fourth in the NFC last season with a 10.3-yard average
on 30 punt returns. He added 90 yards on four kickoff returns.
